profile
I spent much of my formative years sewing dolls clothes, inspired by my mother’s dress-making business. My early studies in art and illustration were rekindled in 1995 when I returned to one of my favourite past times - life drawing. Now, my passion for textiles informs much of my work, which is largely transeasonal. I like to source vintage, end-of-line, remnants or off-cuts and I use my design and embroidery skills to transform and personalise my work.
I am also enthused by the work of Rebecca Crompton, Jae Maries, and Karen Nicol - whose work I had the pleasure of seeing commissioned and developed into fashion pieces during my period of work experience at Clements Ribeiro – as well as Louise Gardiner and Shizuko Kimura. In addition, I’ve worked on the fashion desk at the Daily Telegraph, under the direction of Fashion Director Hillary Alexander, and attended a number of fashion shows during London Fashion Week which has made my return to art practise more meaningful. The work of artists such as Michelangelo, Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Lucian Freud encourage me to push the boundaries of my own work each time I revisit theirs.
I continue to make dolls clothes as well as fashionable pieces such as jackets, dresses, handbags and soft furnishings, and I’m currently exploring the sculptural potential of nuno felt.
