profile

I come from a family where making and doing were part of a way of life.  Introduced to an elderly Singer treadle machine at an early age I later made and decorated clothes for myself.   At school while other girls hated the sewing lessons……I loved them.  Pausing for about forty years with a career and domestic responsibilities I decided to get some formal education in embroidery and joined a City and Guilds class where I discovered the thrill of designing and a deep satisfaction in hand embroidery.

Since then I have sold some work and have been expanding my ideas and understanding of design.  I also enjoy workshops and ways of broadening my understanding and expertise.

I am interested in 16th century embroidery and have explored ways in which the designs of that period can be developed and interpreted using modern techniques and materials.

I have worked on the theme “outside looking in or inside looking out”.  This has led me to think about reflections and distortions and about layers, both visually and layers of meaning.  While I enjoy hand embroidery as a therapy and a craft, I am also interested in exploring stitch as an art form and a means of expression.
